Child star

The Kinderstern is a work of art created by Imi Knoebel , 100% of which has been used in projects for children in need since 1988. The Kinderstern has been able to collect over four million euros in donations since 1988. The “Star for Children in Need” is supported by art lovers, musicians and actors, museums and art fairs.

Mission statement

The child star stands for children's rights .

idea

Art transforms for children's rights

The child star is a social sculpture . It implements the expanded concept of art that Joseph Beuys formulated in 1967, according to which art should also have a socially changing effect. The money redeemed as donations for the Kinderstern is converted into a bearer of children's rights. In this way, the deeper determination of money in general appears: to be the bearer of human rights. The child star stands for the rights and thus for the dignity of all children. It stands for the right to a home, to food, to benevolent care, medical care and to education. The unredeemed rights of children are gathered under its symbol, the children's star is their work of art in times of need.

history

Kinderstern on tour 2011

The children's star was first published in 1988 in red as a screen print. In addition to the original graphics by Sol LeWitt , Jörg Immendorff , Sigmar Polke , Max Bill , Heinz Mack , Keith Haring, this print was part of an art portfolio that was published in 1989 by Luitpold Domberger (Edition Domberger) and was created under the patronage of Lothar Späth . Title of the portfolio: "Kinderstern". The proceeds helped finance parents' homes near children's hospitals.

The artistic intention that led Imi Knoebel to the children's star and that connected him with him from now on went beyond the first project. His intention was for continuity and expansion. The children's star became a program, a promise to step into the breach for children. In the same year, a non-profit association based in Düsseldorf was founded in the name and under the sign of the children's star . Its task is to track down projects carried out by charitable initiatives in the service of needy children. Imi Knoebel, as the artistic initiator himself not a member of the association, committed himself to the continuous production of children's stars for the purpose of the association. Almost every year new children's stars appear in limited colors. These children's stars are donated as recognition to all donors who support the cause of the children's star.
