The Teneguía is a volcano on the southern tip of the Canary Island of La Palma . The 439 meter high cinder cone was created in 1971.

Geographical location

The Teneguía is located in the municipality of Fuencaliente de La Palma south of the village of Los Canarios . It forms the southern end of the volcanic chain of the Cumbres ( Cumbre Nueva and Cumbre Vieja ), which crosses the island of La Palma from the Caldera de Taburiente to the south.

Above is the 657 meter high cone of San Antonio , which was last erupted in 1677.

outbreak

The first eruption began on October 26, 1971. This was followed by rhythmic ejections of gas and fragmented lava. The last eruption took place after three and a half weeks on the 24th day, November 18, 1971. In between there were dozens of events at a total of five, mostly effusive eruptions , some of which were staggered . The total eruptive mass was an estimated 12 million cubic meters. The ejected lava flowed into the sea in several places and created about 29 hectares of new land there. Two people died from asphyxiation from CO 2 .

vegetation

The dark cinder and ash fields only allow a settlement of pioneer vegetation from the sea to a very limited extent under the conditions of the constant north-east trade wind at the low altitude . Only from the crater rim of the San Antonio, which can be walked on, surprisingly an almost closed blanket of green emerges on its crater floor, possibly caused by the entry of sea birds .
