The King's College , King’s for short , or KC ( Chinese 英皇 書院 / 英皇 书院 , Pinyin Yīnghuáng Shūyuàn , Jyutping Ying 1 wong 4 Syu 1 jyun 2 ) is a secondary school for boys ( public school ) in Hong Kong founded in 1926 . The school is one of the oldest schools in the city and is located in one of Hong Kong's six remaining pre-war school buildings. The building has been a listed building since December 2011 . Several Nobel Prize winners gave lectures at the school.
history
The current school had its predecessor in the West Point School ( 西 角 官 學堂 / 西 角 官 学堂 ), which existed from 1857 to 1879. In 1879 the Saiyingpun Anglo-Chinese School ( 西 營盤 官 學堂 / 西 营盘 官 学堂 ) was founded. After a new public school was founded by Reginald Edward Stubbs , the governor of Hong Kong, construction work began in 1923 until it was completed in 1926. The school opened in 1926 under the name King's College in honor of King George V and took over the entire Saiyingpun Anglo-Chinese School.
Four months later, the British Shanghai Defense Force seized the building as a military warehouse and hospital . The school did not resume until March 5, 1928, inaugurated by Governor Cecil Clementi .
840 students enrolled during the first 15 years. Over 80% of the teaching staff were British, with most of the teachers graduated from one of England's two leading old universities - University of Cambridge and University of Oxford .
The school was badly damaged during the Second World War and was used as a stable for horses and mules after the Japanese army occupied Hong Kong . After the war, the school reopened in 1950.
campus
King's College Bonham Campus, built in 1926, is one of the oldest surviving pre-war Hong Kong government school buildings.
A stone carving depicting the royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom is placed on the red brick wall in front of the main entrance to the college.
