The Prinzenstein is a menhir in Börnecke , a district of Blankenburg (Harz) in the Harz district in Saxony-Anhalt .

Location and description

The Prinzenstein is located in the east of Börnecke on the so-called "Prinzenhöhe", on the west side of the Steinweg, immediately before the confluence with Westerhäuser Straße. Here it was placed as a secondary, but its original location is unknown. Perhaps it is a piece of land called “Auf dem Lange Stein”, but perhaps it is also a burial mound near a sulfur - iron source , which was also used as a place .

The menhir is made of quartzite . Its total height is 225 cm, of which 180 cm protrude from the ground. The width is 80 cm and the depth 30 cm. The stone is plate-shaped and has a sloping tip. A modern plaque with the inscription "Prinzenstein 1631" is attached to one side.

Finds from the area around the stone come from the Bernburg culture and the Aunjetitz culture .

The Prinzenstein in historical times and in regional legends

In 1232 the location of the stone served as a thing site. According to a legend, the imperial military leader Johann T'Serclaes von Tilly fought against a Swedish vanguard here in 1631 . A Brandenburg prince is said to have fallen, in whose honor the stone was erected. According to a variant of this legend, it is said to have been a Swedish prince.
