King's Pinnacle is one of the two main peaks within Crowder's Mountain State Park in the western Piedmont region of the state of North Carolina in the United States of America . The other major peak in the park is Crowder's Mountain , they are between the towns of Kings Mountain and Gastonia .
King's Pinnacle is named after the rocks in the summit region of the mountain, which are reminiscent of a crown. The mountain is the remnant of a much higher peak that was formed around 400 to 500 million years ago and eroded to a height of 520 meters above sea level. It rises abruptly to a height of 250 meters above the surrounding area.
King's Pinnacle and nearby Crowder's Mountain separated the hunting grounds of the area's Native American Indians , the Cherokee and Catawba . In the Battle of Kings Mountain , fought southwest of the mountain in 1780, the American patriots won an important victory over the British Army during the American Revolutionary War . The battlefield is now a protected national memorial: Kings Mountain National Military Park .
Several hiking trails lead to the summit of the mountain from which one can see the much higher Appalachians far to the west and north , as well as the skyline of Charlotte , which is about 50 kilometers away in the east .
