Kinnettles Castle

Kinnettles Castle is a castle in Forfar in the Scottish county of Angus . The building, built in the Scottish Baronial Style in the mid-19th century , is located in the middle of a 17.6 hectare estate. The castle is now a luxury hotel. Historic Scotland has listed Kinnettles Castle as a Category B Historic Building.

history

At the beginning of the 14th century, King Robert III. a piece of land in Forfar to Alexander Strachan . This was Baronat Kinnettles. A dated stone opposite the pigeon house of the castle suggests that there must have been a modest, two-story house on the property from 1678.

In the 16th century the land fell to the Lindsays , who held it for 200 years. Then it fell to Sir Thomas Moodie , then Provost of Dundee . A report by Reverend David Ferney from 1791 identifies a " country house " in Kinnettles and states that it is one of the oldest surviving buildings in the area. In the 17th century the property changed hands again; it fell to the Bower family .

In 1802 the property in Kinnettles was sold to John Aberdein Harvey , who had a second country house built, which was surrounded by beautiful parkland. In 1864, James Paterson bought the property and began work on what we now know as Kinnettles Castle.

The two country houses were demolished to make way for the new castle in Scottish Baronial Style, more a symbol of wealth than a defensive structure. It reported that the central tower of Kinnettles Castle along the lines of Ackergill Tower in Wick in the county of Caithness was designed.

In 1914 Sir James Duncan bought the castle and a few neighboring farms and had "expensive changes" made to them. He died about 12 years later. His trustees sold the property to Sir `` Harry Hope '' in 1926, whose family kept it until 1960 when it was sold to the Walker-Munro family .

The later owners divided the property into a western half with the castle and an eastern half with the enclosed garden. After the penultimate owners had further renovations carried out, the castle was leased to a company as a training center.

The only remaining building from the original development of the Kinnettle estate is a farmhouse that was converted into a gardener's home as part of Paterson's extensive renovation.

modification

Kinnettles Castle, formerly from Kinnettles House , is now owned by Clarenco LLP and is marketed under the brand name AmaZing Venues . The current owners bought the castle in March 2011; the previous owners, who had owned the castle for three years, had extensively converted it from a training center into a boutique hotel.

After the completion of the work, the main building of the castle opened as a hotel with nine rooms. The Gate Lodge at the entrance to the property has been converted into a two bedroom vacation home.

Classification

After reopening as a hotel, Kinnettles Castle was given a five-star rating by VisitScotland in both 2013 and 2014.
