Kinnie

Kinnie

Kinnie is the brand name of a soft drink produced by the Simonds Farsons Cisk company since 1952 as an alternative to cola and other carbonated soft drinks in Malta .

The drink is amber-colored and carbonated and is made from chinotto and herbs, especially wormwood , which gives it its bitter taste. The name Kinnie is derived from the comparable Italian lemonade called Chinotto (pronounced: Kinotto), which has been available since at least 1949.

A light version has also existed since 1984, and since 2007 with KinnieZest, another low-calorie variant similar to the “Zero” line of other soft drink manufacturers.

Kinnie is available within Malta in 0.33 liter cans and PET bottles of 0.5, 1.5 and 2 liters respectively. The PET bottles have practically completely replaced the 0.33 and one liter glass bottles that were still in use until around 2005. There is also a 0.25 liter bottle for restaurants (without light or zest).

Outside of Malta, Kinnie is only available through a few importers and mostly in cans.

Other sweet drinks exist within Malta (some from larger corporations) that imitate the taste of Kinnie.
