Chinotto (drink)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Chinotto , pronounced Kinotto , is a soft drink made from the juice of the chinotto fruit and other aromatic plant extracts. The dark drink is visually very similar to the cola , but tastes less sweet and clearly bitter .

The origin of the chinotto is unclear. What is certain is that Chinotto was developed in Italy . This indicates u. a. the name. A credible hypothesis is that the Neri company from Capranica ( Viterbo province ) developed the Chinotto in 1949 in order to stick to the successes of American colas with an "Italian cola". This is also indicated by the brand name "Chin8" used by Neri, which was specifically looking for references to pop culture (ital. 8 = otto). The claim that the drink was invented by the Sanpellegrino company as early as 1932 is not supported by the manufacturer himself. Rather, it says there that the production of Chinotto only started in the early 1950s.

Today different brands produce Chinotto: Sanpellegrino exports it all over the world via the distribution channels of the parent company Nestlé under the brand name Chinò , which was introduced in the 1980s . Even Coca-Cola has in Italy own chinotto as Fanta chinotto launched a less bitter version. Over time, all Chinotto versions have become sweeter . For several years now, a Chinotto recommended by Slow Food Italy has been produced by Lurisia, a thermal spa and mineral fountain company between Cuneo and Savona .

With the exception of Malta , where the drink is widely known as Kinnie , Chinotto is mainly consumed by Italian emigrants outside of Italy. It is available in Italian delicatessen stores, as well as wholesale markets and internet mail order companies .
