Kipf (family name)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kipf is a Franconian family name .

Origin and meaning

The name Kipf goes back to the Old High German name kipfa for the Wagenkipf (also called Wagenrunge). This refers to the part of a horse-drawn wagon to which the drawbar is attached and which enables the wagon to be steered thanks to its rotatable mounting. The name was first associated with the Kropf family in 1277, who built their family seat on the Kipfenberg and accordingly bears the wagon tip as a common figure in their family coat of arms. Since the sale of this family seat to the Eichstätt Monastery around 1301, families resident there have been using the name Kipf. Due to its diamond shape, the term Kipf is still used in the Franconian region for special baked goods , in which wagon stakes were referred to as "Kipf".
