Georg Jacobi von Wangelin

Georg Carl Ludwig Jacobi von Wangelin (born March 28, 1836 in Großjena , † February 10, 1915 in Merseburg ) was a Prussian forest clerk .

Life

He was a son of the Prussian district administrator and manorial estate owner Hermann Georg Ludwig Jacobi (1808–1883) - who was raised to hereditary nobility in 1842 with the addition of "von Wangelin" - and by Adolphine Friederike geb. by Wangelin (1830–1876).

After attending school in Naumburg , Georg Jacobi von Wangelin began a forest internship in 1860 and then studied at the Forest Academy in Eberswalde . In 1864 he interrupted this and volunteered as a Landwehr lieutenant in the German-Danish War . For his services in this campaign, Jacobi von Wangelin was subsequently awarded the Order of the Red Eagle (4th class) with swords . Continuing his studies after the end of the war, he passed the state examination in 1865. Then worked in various forest offices, in 1871 Jacobi von Wangelin was appointed chief forester in Falkenberg (Trossin) . When he was appointed forester in 1877, he was transferred to Gdansk as a councilor . In 1880 he was appointed to a government agency in Merseburg, where he not only stayed until his retirement in 1905, but also kept the city as his place of residence afterwards.

Even during his studies Jacobi von Wangelin was very interested in birds and their protection. From 1886 to 1911 he was therefore chairman and then honorary chairman of the "German Association for the Protection of Birds". He published extensive work on the capercaillie in 1887 and on the great bustard in 1889 in the ornithological monthly . Various smaller publications followed. For the second edition of the renowned bird book by JA Naumann "Natural history of the birds of Central Europe" ", which appeared between 1897 and 1905, von Wangelin wrote the sections: partridge, quail, pheasant, bustard, cranes, godwit, curlews, plovers and thick feet.

For his services he was made an honorary secret government and forestry council in 1912.
