Christ König Church (Wuppertal)
Christ König is a listed Catholic church in the Wuppertal district of Uellendahl-Katernberg .
The congregation of the Herz-Jesu-Kirche in the northern part of Elberfeld commissioned the building in order to do justice to the population on the northern heights of Wuppertal, which had grown rapidly after the Second World War . The architect Joachim Schürmann was commissioned with the planning and built his first church building with the church. The construction was carried out in the years 1959/60, a community hall and a rectory were added later.
The church consists of an extremely simple cube on the plan of a rectangle. The windowless building is walled up outside and inside with quarry stone from the area and has a flat roof. Under the roof, a arc of light , which completely surrounds the cube as a band, illuminates the room and dissolves the compact wall surface towards the top. The construction is planned based on the interior, the exterior is only understood as a shell for this meditative-sheltering interior. Schürmann dispenses with a tower as well as the ornamental design of a facade . The two symmetrical entrance doors on the west side are explained by the baptistery in the middle behind this wall.
The Wuppertal artist Krzysztof Juretko chiseled the stations of a crossroads into some of the ungrounded cuboids of the interior from 2000 .
The entire group of buildings - church, parish hall and rectory - has been a listed building since 2000 as an “impressive, unchanged example of the sacred building from the late 1950s”.
