The fjærland church ( Norwegian : Fjærland kirke ) is one of four churches in the parish Sogndal the municipality in Norway and belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Norway . Until 2000 it belonged to the parish of Balestrand . It is located near Fjærland on the rubble fan that emerged at the mouth of the Mundal valley.

Occasionally it is also referred to as Mundal Church after the Mundal valley , although there is also a town of Mundal, which today has grown together with the town of Fjærland .

history

A chapel was built near Bøyum around 1600, which was destroyed by a storm in 1610. It is unclear whether it was rebuilt afterwards. A church at the exit of the Mundal is mentioned from around 1650. This building was demolished in 1861 and replaced by a new building. This church was rebuilt in 1931 and provided with two side wings that offer 110 additional seats. This renovation was carried out under the direction of the architect Johan Lindström . Since the renovation, the church offers 350 seats. At the time of the renovation, Fjærland still had 750 inhabitants, today that number has shrunk to 300. The church has been painted red since the renovation.

The baptismal bowl is a gift from the mother of a German lieutenant who had a fatal accident in the mountains near Fjærland in 1910. His grave with a memorial stone is still in the cemetery today. The altarpiece is the work of Harald Rutle , a local artist, and was made in 1931.

The organ was built in 1976 by the Jörgensen organ factory in Oslo and put into operation in the same year. It has 14 electoral registers .

The two bells were cast by the Bochum Association in Germany in 1894 . Both bells have an inscription from the Bible, the smaller Psalm 103 verse 2, the larger Matthew 11 verse 28.
