The Church of St. John the Baptist ( Serbian : Црква Светог Јована Крститеља / Crkva Svetog Jovana Kritelja) in Veliki Jasenovac , a village in Opština Zaječar , is a Serbian Orthodox church in Eastern Serbia . The church dedicated to St. John the Baptist belongs to the Deanery Zaječar, the Eparchy Timok of the Serbian Orthodox Church.

location

The church is near the center of the village. The village of Veliki Jasenovac is located 27 km to the northeast, from the municipal capital Zaječar .

history

Before the church was built, a wooden Ascension Chapel stood on the site of the current church tower. The church was built from 1919 to 1930 and inaugurated in 1930 by the then Eparchen Emilijan (Piperković).

architecture

The single-nave church building is 15 m long and 7 m wide and made of solid material. The church has a tiled gable roof , an apse in the east and a free-standing church tower.

The carved iconostasis was mostly painted in a dominant light blue and to a lesser extent in white. The creator of the iconostasis and the numerous icons is unknown. The church is partially painted with Byzantine frescoes.
