The church of San Martino stands on the western edge of the village of Calonico in the Swiss canton of Ticino . Thanks to its dominant position high above the Leventina , it can be seen from afar. The church is dedicated to St. Martin of Tours .

history

Of the church, first mentioned in 1200, only the two-story Romanesque tower in front of the west side with double arched windows has survived. The church surrounded by the cemetery was apparently completely rebuilt in the 17th century. The ossuary on the southwest corner dates from 1849.

description

The choir, closed on three sides, lies north of the central axis. The barrel vault dates from the 18th or 19th century. In the north side chapel there is a wooden altar with twisted columns, four figures of saints and a statue of the Virgin Mary. In the opposite chapel there are remains of paintings with depictions from the life of St. Charles Borromeo from the second half of the 17th century.
