Cornelius Herstatt

Cornelius Herstatt (born June 17, 1959 in Cologne ) is a German innovation researcher and university professor for innovation management. He holds a chair at the Technical University of Hamburg and a visiting professorship (until 2019) at Tohoku University in Sendai ( Japan ). He is director of the Institute for Technology and Innovation Management at the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg and heads the Center for Frugal Innovation, together with Dr. Rajnish Tiwari.

Life

Herstatt is a son of the banker Iwan D. Herstatt in Cologne. After a commercial apprenticeship, he studied business administration and economics at the universities of Cologne , Zurich and Oxford . He received his doctorate from the Institute for Business Research at the University of Zurich and worked for five years as a research assistant at the Business Management Institute of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. In 1990 he was a visiting scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT-Boston). Before being appointed professor in 1998, Herstatt held management positions at an international management consultancy and a Swiss industrial group.

Herstatt is married and has three sons.

research

Herstatt has been researching the phenomenon of "user innovation" since the 1980s. He has done significant work in this field and has placed many well-known publications. With the advent of the Internet, his research increasingly turned towards " Open Source Innovation" in (Internet) communities. Recently, he has been particularly interested in so-called “ frugal innovations ”, which often arise in the context of developing countries and for which users are often a driving force again. Another focus is his research on innovations in aging societies .

Cornelius Herstatt's research is internationally oriented and, in addition to his home country, focuses on Japan and India. He researches and publishes together with international colleagues. Herstatt is the author of many books on innovation research and several hundred publications in German, English and Japanese. Herstatt holds an honorary doctorate from the Technical University of Kaunas (KTU, Lithuania), has held visiting professorships at Australian, Japanese and American universities and is an alumni of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), the German Institute for Japanese Studies, the East-West Center (Hawaii ) and Templeton College (Oxford).
