It is located on Tarafa-bin-al-Abd Street (شارع طرفة بن العبد), around 200 m south of the city gate to Palmyra ( Bab Tadmur ,باب تدمر), about 20 m south of al-Warscha street (Werkstattstraße, شارع الورشة, DMG Šāriʿ al-Warša ), 300 m east of the likewise Greek Orthodox Forty Martyrs Cathedral of Homs and 400 m east of the Syrian Orthodox cathedral, the St. Mary's Church of the Holy Belt .

The feast of St. Elian is held annually on February 6th in the church and attracts large numbers of pilgrims.

history

The church was built in 432 over the place of Julian's death. His bones are in a sarcophagus in a small chapel to the right of the main crypt of the church.

In 1969 and 1970 the Mar Elian church was restored. During the renovation, numerous mosaics from the 5th or 6th century were uncovered in the crypt, depicting Christ , Mary , the apostles and various prophets. These were painted over with frescoes in the 12th century and are the oldest surviving Christian wall representations in Syria.

Today the old frescoes are supplemented by 100 new frescoes in the nave and side aisles of the church, which were painted by two Romanian icon painters and depict various scenes from the life of St. Julian.
