Julian of Emesa
Julian von Emesa (Arabic إليان Ilyān, also Elian von Homs ; † between 284 and 312 in Emesa , today Homs, Syria ) was a Christian doctor and martyr . He is venerated as a saint in the Orthodox churches .
Lore
Julian gained a high reputation as a doctor through his healings. His father was a senior Roman official and had Bishop Silvanus of Emesa , the deacon Luke and the lecturer Mokios arrested and tortured. Julian gained access to the prison and treated the injuries. Thereupon he was arrested by his father too. He should watch the killing of the three convicts by wild animals. Then he threw himself towards the animals, kissed them and tried to soothe them. The convicts were killed anyway. Since Julian did not want to give up his Christian faith, he was tied to a horse on the orders of his father and pulled through the streets. Then large nails were hammered into his head, hands, and feet. He ran with it into a pit and died.
The year of his death is usually assumed to be 284 (at the time of Emperor Numerian).
Adoration
In the place of his martyrdom, the church of St. Elian was built, in which his bones are also buried in a sarcophagus.
The Orthodox memorial for Julian Emesa is 6. February , the Syrian Orthodox of February 7 and 7. March and the Armenian Orthodox of 29. December .
The Church of Saint Ellien in Brownsville / PA, which was built in 1917, is subordinate to the Archdiocese of North America of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch .
