Church of Our Lady of the Rosary (Asmara)
The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary ( Italian Chiesa della Beata Vergine del Rosario ) in Asmara was built in 1921–1923 in the Romanesque - Lombard style . The church is in the center of Asmara. It comes from a time when Eritrea was under Italian colonial rule (see: Colony of Eritrea ).
The construction lasted from June 1921 to September 1923 and the church was on October 14, 1923 Our Lady of the Rosary dedicated .
It was the main church of the Apostolic Vicariate Asmara until 1995, the year the Apostolic Vicariate was dissolved. Since then it has been a parish church of the Asmara Archeparchy . The Eritrean Catholic Church is an autonomous rite church of the Roman Catholic Church .
The 57 m high neo-Gothic tower incorporates architectural elements of Big Ben , the bell tower of the Palace of Westminster , in London . The tower can be climbed and offers a remarkable view of the city center with its ensemble of buildings in the Art Deco style . There is a kindergarten, a primary school, a monastery and a convent school on the site of the church, which was built together with the church.
