About 49% of the population of Eritrea belong to a Christian church. Most of it belongs to the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church . Before Eritrea became independent, it was part of the Coptic Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church .

Denominations

In 1998 the Archbishop of Asmara became patriarch of the new Eritrean Church.

The Eritrean Catholic Church has eparchies in Asmara , Barentu , Keren and Segheneity .

The Lutheran Church , the Roman Catholic Church and the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church have also been officially represented in the country since 2002 . There are 91,232 Protestants in Eritrea (2% of the population). The Kale Hiywot Church of Eritrea is a smaller church.

There are about 150,000 Catholics in four eparchies.

The Seventh-day Adventist Church is banned in Eritrea.

The United States Department of State in its 2006 Religious Freedom Report said Eritrea was a country of particular concern. There is repression against Christians who practice their religion outside the recognized churches: They have been sent to prison for years, there is torture.
