The Church of the Good Shepherd in Podhradí u Aše in the Czech Republic in Okres Cheb is one of the few medieval Protestant churches in the Czech Republic . Today it belongs to the Evangelical Church of the Bohemian Brethren .

location

The Church of the Good Shepherd is located on a mountain above the village. There are remains of Neuberk Castle and later castles on the adjacent site .

history

The church was built between 1470 and 1490 by the Eger burgrave Heinz von Zedtwitz as a castle and burial chapel. In 1542 the church became Protestant. The Ascher Ländchen under the influence of the Protestant Counts von Zedtwitz was a specialty in the otherwise predominantly Catholic Austria-Hungary and later Czechoslovakia . Unlike the church in Aš , it survived the era of communism largely unscathed, but is in need of renovation. In 1992, conservation measures were started, for which former German residents made a large part of the funds available. A service in German was held every second Sunday of the month. Since 1992, a parish fair has been celebrated on the second Sunday after Easter. The interior of the church was extensively renovated after 1995.

description

The church is an early baroque , rectangular hall church with a polygonal tower on the east side. The builders only used handcrafted wooden nails for the wooden interior of the church.

In the church there is a memorial to the victims of the First World War , which was unveiled on July 29, 1928. Below the church is another monument to the victims of the wars of 1848, 1859 and 1866, which was inaugurated on June 11, 1893.
