The church was built together with the adjoining Capuchin monastery on behalf of Count Ludwig Colloredo-Wallsee . The founding of the monastery in Opočno was decided in 1673 by the provincial chapter of the Capuchin order in the course of the recatholization efforts in the Protestant area. The foundation stone for the monastery complex was laid on June 30, 1674. The church was built in 1676-78 on the newly built Great Square (today Kupkovo náměstí ) by the architect P. Bruno from Budweis and the Italian builder Bernardo Minelli . The first Capuchins arrived in Opočno on May 23, 1677, a year before the church was completed.

After the church fell victim to the flames in 1733, it was renovated until 1735. Most of the furnishings, including the altars, pictures and the pulpit, date from this period .

During the communist period in Czechoslovakia , the Capuchins were expelled from the monastery and expropriated and the monastery buildings were nationalized in 1950. Since 2015 they have been demanding the return of their lost property. In doing so, they intend to transfer the monastery grounds to the city of Opočno free of charge. However, the church remains in church ownership.
