The Church of Højby is a church of the Danish People's Church in the Danish town Højby . It is located in the parish of Højby Sogn in Odsherred Municipality .

Architecture and history

The Romanesque church was built in the first half of the 12th century and is the largest church in Odsherred. Only sparsely hewn field stones were used as building material. The nave had a total of six and the choir had three windows. The church tower was then added in the period after 1400 from bricks to the west of the nave. He received a Gothic stepped gable with decorations . Around 1500 a brick porch was added on the south side. A side aisle and the sacristy were built on the north side .

In the interior of the church there was initially a wooden beam ceiling, which was replaced by Gothic vaults as early as the 13th century. The church is known for the medieval frescoes that have been preserved here . These frescoes date from the beginning of the 15th century and were uncovered and restored in 1901. In the eastern part of the ship there is an illustration of a legend according to which Saint Olav competed for Norway's throne with his brother Herald Haarderaade and then Olav became Norway's king. In the middle part of the ship three events from the Bible are depicted, including the three wise men .

The pulpit in the church, including the sound cover , was created in 1656 by Lorentz Jørgensen from Holbæk , a pupil of Hans Gudewerdt the younger of the Eckernförde carving school. The lord of Dragsholm Christopher Urne and his wife Sophia are depicted on the pulpit . Urne had brought the artist to the area.

After a murder committed in the church, she was at times considered desecrated.
