The church

The Evangelical Lutheran fortified church Schwallungen is located in the municipality of Schwallungen in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district in Thuringia . Not far from the fortified church is the Kemenate Schwallungen , a Romanesque residential tower.

history

The fortified church was founded in the 8th and 9th centuries. Components of it can be seen inside the church, because they were during the renovation in the 16./17. Century were not demolished, but were integrated into the new building. The church was largely rebuilt and rebuilt in the 15th to 16th centuries. The church tower in its current form dates back to 1609, but rests on much older foundation walls. Renovations and changes took place in the 18th to 19th centuries. The church and the neighboring bower were changed, as indicated by inscriptions in the keystones of the doors and gates.

The churchyard wall was renewed in the south. Gaden and a rifle notch have been retained in the churchyard wall.

Rehabilitation of the environment

From 1998 the surroundings of this fortified church could be renovated, especially in the western part.
