Witikon old church and churchyard

The Kirchhof Witikon is a historic but still operating cemetery in the Witikon district in the east of Zurich . It surrounds the Old Church of Witikon .

history

Together with the construction of the first chapel on the Witiker church hill, the cemetery around the church should also have been created. In 1270 the cemetery and church were first mentioned as a branch chapel of the Grossmünster . When the state took over the property of the Grossmünster in 1848, the church and cemetery became the property of the Canton of Zurich .

In 1929 the church hill area was placed under homeland security. The historical coexistence of church and churchyard were decisive for the new building of the reformed church in today's district center of Witikon, so that the ensemble of cemetery and church was not destroyed by an expansion of the church, which had become too small. Since the churchyard had become too small for the growing quarter, its successor, the Witikon cemetery , was inaugurated in 1957 . In 1986 the churchyard and the old church Witikon were placed under monument protection, whereupon the cemetery around the old church was largely restored to its state of the 1920s. In 2010 the church and churchyard were taken over by the city of Zurich.

Area and surroundings

The old church Witikon is located on a hill in the south of the Witikonerstrasse and is 629  m above sea level. M. the highest church in the city of Zurich. The historic churchyard surrounds the church in teardrop shape, with the curve pointing to the east. The grave fields are divided into two areas on the site and almost completely encompass the church. Even if the churchyard was replaced by the Witikon cemetery in the 1950s, it is still used today for urn burials. However, its catchment area is limited to the inhabitants of Alt-Witikon.
