Kirkistown Castle

Kirkistown Castle ( Irish Caisleán Bhaile Chirc ) is a castle near the village of Cloghy ( Clochaigh ) in County Down, Northern Ireland . The residential tower with Bawn ( curtain wall ) is a State Care Historic Monument in Town Country of Kirkistown ( Baile Chirc ) in District Ards and North Down .

It is an impressive three-story residential tower that Roland Savage , a Norman landowner, had built in 1622 to replace a round tower from the 9th century. The castle was inhabited until 1731. It was built after the English colonization of Ulster, but in the tradition of classic residential towers from the late Middle Ages. Parts of the Bawn with its three-quarter flanking towers at the corners have also been preserved to this day. The tower block was rebuilt in Gothic style by Colonel Johnston in 1800 , and further work was carried out in 1836 by a very young builder Montgomery of Gray Abbey . The building remained with an unfinished roof and broken windows, so that the elements caused a rapid decline. The Northern Ireland Environment Agency first opened the castle to the public in 2001.
