The Kirschflecksalmler or Perez- Tetra (also Tetra Perez ) ( Hyphessobrycon erythrostigma ) is a freshwater ornamental fish from the order of the tetra- like . It comes from the black water of the upper Amazon basin .

features

Fully grown cherry tetras reach a body length of about six centimeters. The body shows a typical elongated diamond shape and is very compressed on the sides. The fins are well developed, especially the anal fin. The dorsal fin shows the characteristic shape of an elongated sickle and is reddish-gray in color. The base and tips are dark. The upper part of the body is gray-brown and is enlivened by reddish shades, while the belly is yellowish in color. The reflections of the shed dress change depending on the incidence of light. A bright red round mark is visible in the middle of the body.

The males are smaller but more colorful than the females. They can also be easily distinguished from the females by their long dorsal and anal fins. The color of the dress can change depending on the mood of the fish.

Similar species

In addition to the actual cherry spot tetra , there are two similar species that are important in aquaristics: Socolof's cherry spot tetra ( Hyphessobrycon socolofi ) and the red-backed cherry spot tetra ( Hyphessobrycon pyrrhonotus ).

Red-backed Kirschflecksalmler (Hyphessobrycon pyrrhonotus)

While H. pyrrhonotus can be distinguished very well from H. erythrostigma and H. socolofi by a strong red stripe on the back , since this does not occur in the others, it is more difficult between H. erythrostigma and H. socolofi . The safest and most noticeable distinguishing feature is the white stripe in the anal fin, which in H. erythrostigma is elongated in the first two to three fin rays and forms a hook here, similar to H. pyrrhonotus . H. socolofi remains smaller than the other two species.

Aquarium keeping

This beautiful and peaceful tetra should only be kept in groups of at least ten animals.

A pool 80 centimeters long, water temperature 23–28 ° C and soft water with a pH value in the range 5.5–7.5 should be provided. A dark substrate and the filtering over peat, with an associated pH value in the slightly acidic range (below 7), make the colors appear much more intense.

Kirschflecksalmler stay mainly in the middle water zone. From there, you can also make detours to the lower and upper water zones. The group often “falls apart” - but reunites, at the latest when there is an impending danger.

The animals, which have so far only rarely been reproduced in captivity, prefer a varied diet of dry and live food. Only the similar Socolofs cherry spot tetra ( Hyphessobrycon socolofi ), which originate from the area of the Rio Negro , have so far been bred in larger quantities.
