Kiwirrkura is a settlement of the Pintupi , an Aboriginal tribe , in Western Australia about 150 kilometers west of Kintore and 700 kilometers from Alice Springs . This settlement was founded in 1983 by Aborigines who wanted to settle back in their traditional land and prevent the exploitation of their land by mining companies. The place has developed into a well-known artists' settlement since 1996.

history

On October 19, 2001, the local Aborigines received a native title , the right to their land, which now belongs to the Tjamu Tjamu Cooperation . This right also includes the extraction of minerals and the exploitation of oil deposits there. The area includes the Gibson Desert , west of Lake Mackay and is 42,904 km².

After Kiwirrkura came the Pintupi Nine , who were the last Aboriginal family to live as hunters and gatherers in the desert landscape around Lake Mackay until 1984 without contact with the western world . Three of the nine Pintupi Nine (Warlimpirrnga, Walala and Tamlik (called Thomas) Tjapaltjarri) are known and recognized as painters, also known in Australia as The Last Nomads .

In 1996 two small groups of Aboriginal women from Kiwirrkura and Kintore started the painting style of the Papunya Tula Artists , the dot painting (point painting ). Women from this place are known as artists such as Walangkura Napanangka , Doreen Reid Nakamarra and Yukulti Napangati .

Kiwirrkura was flooded on March 6, 2001, so that the 170 residents of the village had to be brought to Alice Springs. They were in mortal danger because Kiwirrkurra Community, Western Australia can not be achieved as one of the most isolated places in Australia in case of danger in good time - the place is only about 1.200 km long dirt road from Port Hedland in the west and a 850 km long track from Alice Springs in the Northern Territory to to reach.
