The river Þverá , which in parts also bears the name Kjarrá , is located in West Iceland in the municipality of Borgarbyggð .

Course of the river and names

The Þverá springs are located in lakes on the Tvídægra plateau . From there it flows through some valleys and is called in these after the valleys Kjarrá and Örnólfsdalsá. After that it bears the name Þvérá again.

As such, it flows into the Hvítá at Stafholtsey .

The total length of the river is 64 km; 18 km under the name Þvérá, 18 km as Örnólfsdalsá and 32 km as Kjarrá.

The average amount of water in the spring river is 15 m³ / sec.

history

In the 12th century a local assembly of things was moved to a headland between Þvérá and Hvítá and remained there as the so-called Þvérárþing until modern times.

The Þvérá / Kjarrá is also a well-known salmon river.
