The Kjelfoss is a waterfall in the Norwegian municipality of Aurland in the village of Gudvangen in the province of Vestland . It is located on the major E16 trunk road from Bergen to Oslo and is located in the Nærøyfjorden World Heritage Park . The total height of the waterfall is disputed. The Central Statistical Office of Norway leads him with 840 m. That would make it the highest waterfall in Norway. Other sources such as B. the World Waterfall Database, indicate a height of 705 m.

The Kjelfossen falls in several stages, with the greatest free fall height of approx. 198 m. The waterfall is part of a nameless outflow from Lake Kjelfossvotni at an altitude of 1180 m. It consists of three arms, also known as Vetle Kjelfoss and Store Kjelfoss . The third and smallest arm is unnamed and is only visible when the snow melts and in heavy rain. The three arms flow into each other in the Kjelfossjuvet gorge and form the Kjelfossgrovi river , which in turn flows into the Nærøydalselvi .

The name Kjelsfossen ( Kessel Waterfall ) is said to have originated when a milkmaid forgot her kettle in the river and it was washed into the waterfall. The Kjelfoss store is also known locally as the Brudesløret (Bridal Veil).
