Kjelvik is a place in the Norwegian municipality of Nordkapp on the island of Magerøya in the province of Troms og Finnmark .

location

The village is located in a small bay on the southeast side of the island by the Porsangerfjord . In front of Kjelvik is the small island of Kjelen . On the land side, the place is surrounded by mountains that rise steeply up to a height of 300 meters.

history

In the past, Kjelvik was the largest town on Magerøya and served as the community center. Today's Nordkapp municipality was also called Kjelvik accordingly. In 1844 an octagonal wooden church was built in Kjelvik. From 1853 the place was called by steam ships, from 1869 Kjelvik was a port of the Hamburg route . On January 16, 1882, Kjelvik was hit by a strong hurricane , which completely destroyed the wooden church.

However, the remote location of Kjelvik meant that the function as a community center gradually passed to the more favorably located Honningsvåg . In 1895 Honningsvåg officially took over the function, whereby the municipality name Kjelvik was retained. In 1910 Kjelvik was connected to the telephone network. In 1914 the street was expanded in the village. Around 1930, emergency funds to combat unemployment were used to build a road from Nordvågen to Kjelvik. However, it was not completed. During the Second World War , Kjelvik was completely destroyed by German troops during the Northern Lights operation in 1944 and the population was forcibly evacuated. Due to the unfavorable location and the political aim of centralizing the settlements, there was no organized reconstruction after the end of the war. However, capacities for fish processing have been built up. In 1950 the municipality was renamed, which has been called since the North Cape.

Today there are several buildings used as summer houses in the village. There is the Kjelvikclub where the former residents of Kjelvik and their descendants maintain the memory of old Kjelvik.
