Clarinet Concerto No. 2 (Weber)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Clarinet Concerto No. 2 in E flat major op. 74 (J. 118) was written by Carl Maria von Weber in 1811 for the clarinet virtuoso Heinrich Joseph Baermann .

History of origin

At the beginning of 1811 Weber got to know the clarinet violinist Heinrich Joseph Baermann in Munich . Enthusiastic about his playing he wrote for him the Concertino in E flat major op. 26 (J. 109). After the concertino was very well received by the audience at the premiere on April 5, 1811, King Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria commissioned him to compose two further concertos for clarinet, as well as a bassoon concert and a cello concert. In the same year Weber completed his Clarinet Concerto No. 1 in F minor, Op. 73 (J. 114), the Clarinet Concerto No. 2 in E flat major, Op. 74 (J. 118) and the Bassoon Concerto in F major, Op. 75 (J. 127). However, he never wrote the commissioned cello concerto. Both clarinet concertos point the way for the romantic solo literature for clarinet. Weber used new techniques when writing for orchestras, such as the much more intensive use of the wind instruments and timpani, and split passages in the string parts.
