The Poor Clare Monastery in Merano , founded in 1309, was the oldest monastery in Merano .

The monastery was owned by Duchess Euphemia (1281-1347), wife of Otto III. , the Count of Tyrol , and was located with his Marienkirche on Kornplatz, the market at that time, and bordered the Rennweg .

The Katharinenkapelle on the opposite side of the Rennweg also belonged to the monastery. So that the nuns could go there while maintaining the enclosure , a flying buttress was built in 1603 , which connected the monastery with the chapel.

During the Peasant Wars , the monastery was looted in 1525.

As part of the Josephine church reform , the monastery was secularized in 1781 and the buildings torn down or sold. The Marienkirche was first adapted as a residential building in 1794 and converted into a bank in 1921 by Adalbert Wietek . Remnants of wall paintings from the church were put back in here. The Katharinenkapelle was converted into a residential building, remains of the chapel can still be seen at Rennweg 70-72. Two cloisters have also been preserved. In one of these, part of the frescoes in St. Mary's Church were transferred by Cassian Dapoz .

The remains of the monastery have been a listed building since 1960.
