Juerg Spahr

Jürg Spahr (stage name Jüsp ; born February 1, 1925 in Catania ; † March 14, 2002 in Basel ) was a Swiss cartoonist and cabaret artist .

Jürg Spahr was born into a Swiss merchant family in Sicily and grew up in eastern Switzerland from 1939. From 1945 to 1948 he studied law.

Spar published his first cartoons in 1943 and from 1948 worked as a freelance caricaturist and graphic artist. From 1948 to 1951 he appeared in the Kikeriki cabaret in Basel and in 1951 in the Kom (m) ödchen in Düsseldorf . He liked to work on sporting topics in his drawings. He "was a distinguished cartoonist, well-known far beyond Swiss borders and award-winning".

In 1988 Spahr was honored with the Ehrespalebärglemer . His well-known works included the drawings for the Nebelspalter , the National-Zeitung , the bridge builder and the week . In total, he made around 10,000 drawings. Spahr played a decisive role in setting up the Caricature & Cartoon Museum Basel and was its first curator from 1978 to 1995.

Jürg Spahr found his final resting place on the Wolfgottesacker in Basel.
