Klaus-Dieter Wiegand

Klaus-Dieter Wiegand (born March 3, 1945 ; † July 2011 in Braunschweig ) was a German railway engineer and expert .

Life

Wiegand passed his state examination at the Technical University of Braunschweig in 1970 and worked there from 1971 to 1976 as a research assistant at the "Institute for Railway Engineering and Traffic Safety". In 1976 he did his doctorate with Klaus Pierick . After a one-year stay for research purposes at the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne , he continued his research at the TU Braunschweig. Wiegand was the managing partner of the engineering company for traffic planning and traffic safety (IVV) from 1980 to 1996. Since 1982 he has also been a recognized expert for railway, signaling and security systems. In addition to Pierick, he was managing partner of the ipw engineering company founded in 1971 (ipw engineering company Prof. Dr.-Ing.Pierick Prof. Dr.-Ing.Wegand). In 1983 he was appointed honorary professor for testing and approval of railway safety systems by the TU Braunschweig . From 1997 until his death in July 2011 he was the sole managing partner of ipw engineering company.

Wiegand was recognized worldwide as an expert for railway safety technology and has testified as such in numerous court proceedings, such as the Transrapid accident .
