The Klaus-Steilmann-Haus is a sports boarding school and part of the Westphalia Olympic Training Center in the Wattenscheid district of the Ruhr area city of Bochum . The Klaus-Steilmann-Haus was opened in 2001 as a sports boarding school with financial support and sponsorship of the City of Bochum, Olympic Training Center Westphalia, as well as the Friends of the Olympic Training Center Westphalia and sponsors. This included in particular the Wattenscheid textile manufacturer Klaus Steilmann , to whom the sports boarding school owes its name. The aim of the sports boarding school is to provide talented young athletes with a living and living situation that is adapted to their individual needs and that enables them to reconcile sports, school and leisure time.

At the Bochum-Wattenscheid location, the Westphalia Olympic Training Center supports the main sports athletics , rhythmic gymnastics and water polo ((). In addition, the sports of swimming , synchronized swimming and basketball (♀ / ♂), and later also the promotion and care of young soccer players, have gained in importance. The Bundesliga club VfL Bochum has its young talents from home and abroad looked after at the sports boarding school at the Olympic base.

Infrastructure

The Klaus-Steilmann-Haus is located on the external base of the Olympic base in Westphalia in Bochum and thus in close proximity to the training facilities and service facilities of the base and the Lohrheide stadium. Other training facilities in the immediate vicinity and the Westenfeld sports center are centrally located and can be reached quickly thanks to the good connection between the OSP and public transport.

Various types of secondary school are available locally and - due to their cooperative attitude towards top-class sport - are known as partner schools for sport. Two grammar schools, a secondary school, a comprehensive school and a secondary school form the school network system, which has been awarded the “ Elite School of Sports ” sponsorship award every year since 1997 .

The sports boarding school is divided into three floors and offers space for 49 athletes. In addition, rooms are also given to guests. The individual residential units can be used by 3 to 6 people (shared apartments within the house) with 3–5 single rooms or 3 double rooms. Each apartment has a kitchen, toilets and a bathroom for common use. In addition, two apartments on the ground floor of the house have facilities for the disabled.

In addition, the entire facility is also used for training camp measures by the regional and central associations.

Resident structure

The Klaus-Steilmann-Haus is inhabited by underage and adult athletes from the sports of athletics, disabled sports, rhythmic gymnastics, swimming, synchronized swimming and football. Without exception, the athletes are top athletes with a very good sporting perspective and predominantly with a management team. They come from all parts of Germany, partly also from neighboring countries.

A committee made up of at least one representative from the areas of sport, partial boarding, custodians, sport boarding and OSP management decides on the admission of athletes to the boarding school. A six-month probationary period is mandatory in order to better assess the athlete's suitability for boarding school.

The athletes live separately according to gender in shared apartments with up to six members. The differentiation between underage and adult shared apartments enables specific care for the age groups.
