Klaus Gersten

Klaus Gersten (born August 22, 1929 in Glogau , Silesia ) is a German mathematician, engineer and university professor specializing in fluid mechanics .

Life

Gersten studied mathematics and physics at the TH Braunschweig from 1949 to 1953 and received his doctorate there in 1957 under Hermann Schlichting . He then headed the Theoretical Aerodynamics department there . He was deputy director of the Institute for Aerodynamics of the German Research Institute for Aviation (DFL) in Braunschweig. After his habilitation in 1960, he was appointed to the Ruhr University in Bochum in 1964, where he was the first professor in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the then still young university. He headed the Institute for Thermo- and Fluid Dynamics there until his retirement .

As a visiting professor, he taught in Rio de Janeiro, Nagoya and Tucson.

In 1992 Gersten was awarded a Dr.-Ing. E. h. of the University of Essen. He is a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna and the Braunschweig Scientific Society . In 2003 Klaus Gersten received the Ludwig Prandtl Ring from the German Aerospace Society .
