"What to do" (Düsseldorf)

Klaus Klinger (* 1954 in Essen ) is an artist living in Düsseldorf who is primarily present through his numerous wall paintings .

biography

Klaus Klinger was a master student at the Düsseldorf Art Academy , graduating in 1980, with Gerhard Richter among others . From 1977 to 1990 he was a founding member of the wall painting group Düsseldorf . The non-profit association Farbfieber emerged from this group in 1987 . Klaus Klinger has been managing the one-world product Mural Global , which is under the auspices of UNESCO, since 1998 , also with an international claim, as well as the Mural-Mobil project since 2003 .

Klinger says of himself: “I've never been very interested in the commercial art market and art in closed spaces. I like art on the street and the exchange with people. It's about the democratization of public space ”. In 2016 there were around 40 of his wall paintings in Düsseldorf alone, which he created together with his team from the wall painting group Farbfieber and artists from all over the world. His large-scale illustrations can be found close together, especially in the Flingern district around Ackerstrasse. The Kiefernstraße , formerly popular with the squatter scene, is now known nationwide as a total work of art.

He is co-initiator and artistic director of the 40-degree Urban Art Festival, which took place in 2015 on Gustaf-Gründgens-Platz in Düsseldorf with international artists from the street art scene and has been held every two years in different parts of Düsseldorf since then. Together with the Kiefernstrasse children's club run by the Düsseldorf Youth Welfare Office, workshops teach young people how to deal with art.

Although Klinger in his works, initially simply illegally painted on demolished houses, sometimes strongly pointed to grievances, also in his surroundings - he used to take part in demonstrations in front of Düsseldorf City Hall - he is now being supported somewhat more by the city. In October 2018 he received the medal of merit of the state capital Düsseldorf from the mayor.

When asked how he envisions his future, Klinger replied: "A particularly exciting task for me would be to completely design a complete housing estate - from buildings to benches to green spaces - in communication with the residents, investors or housing associations" .
