Klaus Wilkens

Klaus Wilkens (born November 1, 1942 in Lüneburg ) is a German economist and honorary president of the Deutsche Lebens-Rettungs-Gesellschaft e. V. (DLRG).

Life

Wilkens joined the DLRG in 1952. His hometown group is the local group Lüneburg. There he was from 1961 to 1999, among other things, 1st chairman, technical director, diving and youth warden.

In 1971 Wilkens became a member of the Federal Presidium. At first he was deputy federal chairman of the DLRG youth from 1971 to 1974. From 1974 to 1989 he was the technical director of the presidium (training, engagement, sport). He was treasurer from 1989 to 1995 before being elected vice president in 1995.

In October 1998 Klaus Wilkens was elected President of the DLRG. On October 18, 2013, Hans-Hubert Hatje was unanimously elected as his successor, and Wilkens himself was named Honorary President.

Wilkens was also represented in international water rescue organizations. From November 1997 to August 2012 he was President of the International Life Saving Federation of Europe (ILSE), of which he was subsequently appointed Honorary President. From February 1998 to April 2012 he was Vice President and from April 2012 to November 2012 President of the International Life Saving Federation (ILS). He was also chairman of the Federal Association for the Promotion of Swimming Training (BFS) until 2016 .

Wilkens is married and has two children. Professionally, he was a lecturer in business administration at the University of Hamburg and retired in 2006.

In 2003 Klaus Wilkens was awarded the Great Cross of Merit of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany , which was presented by Federal Minister of the Interior Otto Schily . He received numerous other national and international honors. Wilkens is a member of the International Swimming Hall of Fame and the International Lifesaving Hall of Fame.
