Little Adra
Aja or Little Adra was a kingdom of the Adja in what is now the Republic of Benin with the capital Ajatche and the official language Aja .
According to legend, around 1620 there were succession disputes and the Ardra kingdom was divided. "Hogbonu" appears as the first name. The first king (title "Ahosu") would have been Te-Agdanlin.
After the line of rulers died out, the empire was re-established in 1688 by a prince of Allada under the name Ajache Ipo, which was only retained from 1794 onwards.
On February 23, 1863, the Kingdom of Porto Novo accepted French protection to repel the British advance. However, the neighboring kingdom of Abomey resented the French presence, whereupon war broke out between the two kingdoms.
In 1883 the French navy landed in Porto Novo and Cotonou and Porto Novo was incorporated into the French colony of Dahomey . In 1900 it became the capital of Dahomey, today's Benin .
On February 7, 1908, the city is annexed to France and the regent and his descendants become chef supérieur . The royal dynasty does not die out until 1976.
