Al (l) ada or Ardres (French) is a city in Benin and used to be the capital of the Fon kingdom of the same name , which was founded around 1440 by people from Tado .

The first king and a large part of the population were Adja , so that an alliance was concluded early on with the "brothers" of Sahé . But already the second or third regent was a Fon .

history

Around 1610 the Fon ruler dynasty was deposed and Hunungungu from the Adja dynasty of Ardra was installed. From around 1615 some Fon emigrated and founded the city of Abomey with the Kingdom of Dahomey . The memory of the emigrants was preserved through the festival of the dead "Journey to Allada" - thus death was seen as a spiritual return to the land of the ancestors (see description in King Houessou Akaba ).

In March 1724 the kingdom was conquered by King Dossou Agadja von Dahomey. King Tegbesu of Dahomey set 1734 one his loan paid prince one, whose title and office inherited in the male line. This dynasty died out around 1780 and a descendant of the original royal dynasty of Alada was installed in its place.

On February 4, 1894, French troops liberated the principality in the fight against Dahomey, which was now allowed to call itself an independent kingdom again. In 1909 this kingdom was annexed by France and the king and his descendants became "chef supérieur".
