Little Marienkirche (Lippstadt)
The Kleine Marienkirche is the listed ruin of the former collegiate church of St. Marien in Lippstadt , a town in the Soest district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). It is maintained by the Lippstadt women's monastery , a corporation under public law , which, as an evangelical institution, took the place of a women's community based on the Augustine Rule during the Reformation , but is no longer denominationally bound today.
Building history and architecture
Construction began around 1190 with the Romanesque nuns' choir in the west. It has a single nave, one and a half yokes long and was consecrated in 1222. Only after a construction interruption was the subsequent Gothic nave, three and a half bay long, built as a hall church . This happened mainly in the 1240s and evidently based on the model of the cathedral long house in neighboring Paderborn, which was being built at the same time. The collegiate church does not have a transept, nor does it have a west tower. The current polygonal east choir has replaced an earlier, possibly late Romanesque one from around 1300. Above the east aisle on the south side there was a choir tower, which was demolished in the 19th century due to the risk of collapse, as were the vaults and roofs of the entire dilapidated church. Since then, it has remained unchanged and unplastered as a romantic, beautiful ruin, where the differently designed tracery windows and the two portals are particularly impressive.
In the park-like ambience, remains of the medieval enclosure and the monastery buildings from the 18th century have been preserved within the old monastery walls.
