The small nander ( Nandus nandus ) is a representative of the Nanderbarsch (Nandidae) native to Southeast Asian freshwater waters and the type species of the genus Nandus . It is also called Nander and Indian multi- spined for short , but is not closely related to the South American and West African multi-spined species (Polycentridae).

features

The small nander reaches a maximum length of 20 cm, but usually remains smaller. Its almost completely scaled body is moderately elongated and has a brown-olive, dark green or dark brown base color and marbled with large spots. The top is usually darker, the bottom slightly reddish. The fins are, apart from the partially overlapping marbling in the dorsal fin, greenish to yellowish transparent. The mouth is large and protractile (can be extended), the lower jaw protrudes. The gill cover is sawn, the gill cover ends in a flat thorn. Males are darker. Their fins are a little bigger.

Way of life

The fish live in fresh water and in light brackish water , especially in stagnant or slowly flowing waters, in lakes, reservoirs and canals, as well as in trenches and on flooded fields. They carnivorously feed on smaller fish, aquatic insects and small crustaceans. Nander perch are free spawners that lay around 300 eggs. A brood care not take place.
