The small flying squirrels ( Petaurillus ) are a common type of flying squirrel in Malaysia . These are the smallest of all flying squirrels. More common for this genus is actually the name "dwarf sliding squirrel", which is synonymous with the genus Petinomys .
features
Emilia's smallest flying squirrel is the smallest flying squirrel with a head body length of 7 cm and a tail length of 6 cm. The other species are only slightly larger. All species inhabit dense tropical rainforests and have been little explored.
Systematics
The genus Petaurillus was first described and established in 1908 by the British zoologist Oldfield Thomas . It was created when the genus Sciuropterus , which was later synonymous with Pteromys , was divided into several new genera. Thomas mainly used different tooth features to differentiate Petaurillus from the other genera. As a nomenclature type , the Hoses tiny sliding squirrel ( Petaurillus hosei ) , which he described as early as 1900, served . At the same time he described Emilia's little flying squirrel ( Petaurillus emiliae ) as a new species.
Currently, three species are distinguished within the genus:
- Emilia's tiny flying squirrel , Petaurillus emiliae Thomas 1908 , northern Borneo
- Hoses tiny sliding squirrel , Petaurillus hosei ( Thomas 1900 ), northern Borneo
- Selangor squirrel , Petaurillus kinlochii ( Robinson & Kloss 1911 ), Malay Peninsula
