Iomys is a common genus of flying squirrels in Southeast Asiawith two species.

features

The Horsfield's flying squirrel is the much more widespread and better known species. It is also known as the Javanese flying squirrel, but this does not do justice to the extent of its range. Its fur is red-brown on the top and grayish on the underside. Sometimes the abdominal region has an orange tinge. The head body length is 20 cm, plus 18 cm tail. In contrast, the Mentawai flying squirrel is restricted to two of the Mentawai Islands off the coast of Sumatra . Because of its small distribution area, it is listed as endangered by the IUCN .

When establishing the genus in 1908 , Oldfield Thomas defined the genus-typical shape of the upper molars as well as the absence of the upper small premolar p3 and the clearly flattened tympanic bullae as characteristics typical of the genus .

species

The genus Iomys was first described and established in 1908 by the British zoologist Oldfield Thomas . It was created when the genus Sciuropterus , which was later synonymous with Pteromys , was divided into several new genera. Thomas mainly used various tooth features to differentiate Iomys from the other genera. The Horsfield's flying squirrel ( Iomys horsfieldii ) served as a nomenclature type and as further species of the genus he listed I. thomsoni and I. davisoni , both of which are now considered subspecies of the Horsfield's flying squirrel.

The following two species are currently assigned to the genus Iomys :
