Kleistpark

The Kleistpark is a green area in Frankfurt (Oder) named after Heinrich von Kleist . The park, which is around six hectares today, is located in the “Obere Stadt” district (residential districts 105 and 505). It is bordered to the north by Karl-Liebknecht-Strasse, to the east by Autostrasse, which is part of Leipziger Strasse, to the south by Fürstenwalder Strasse and to the west by Humboldtstrasse.

history

In 1802 a cemetery was set up on the western edge of the city. Today, the boundaries of the former cemetery are marked by Karl-Liebknecht-Strasse and Rosa-Luxemburg-Strasse in the north, Franz-Mehring-Strasse in the east, Am Kleistpark and Fürstenwalder Strasse in the south and Humboldtstrasse in the west.

After the establishment of today's main cemetery, the name “Old Cemetery” became established. Among those buried in the "Old Cemetery" was the military musician and composer Gottfried Piefke, who died in 1884 . His grave has not been preserved.

The cemetery was badly damaged in World War II . From 1950 to 1953 the cemetery was converted into a public park and was given the name “Kleistpark” in honor of the Frankfurt (Oder) -born poet Heinrich von Kleist during the celebrations on the occasion of the anniversary of the first documentary mention of Frankfurt in 1253. The redesign of the cemetery sparked protests, but the National Reconstruction Agency (NAW) carried out the work. The high cemetery wall was removed to a height of 1  m . Only a few of the graves have survived. In the 1950s and 1960s there were several animal enclosures in Kleistpark. In 1966 the Frankfurt Poliklinik (today's “Medical Center”) opened in the street Am Kleistpark (formerly Gurschstraße ).

In the 1970s and 1980s, the park was reduced in size by more than half, and eleven-storey prefabricated residential buildings were built on the separated area . The houses were by the early 1980s, newly built four-lane, deeply indented into the area highway separated from Kleist Park. The “Café im Kleistpark” was also separated from the Kleistpark by the expressway, is now called “Café am Kleistpark” and can be reached from Kleistpark via the Ernst-Thälmann-Brücke. The bridge replaces the missing piece of Ernst-Thälmann-Straße due to the expressway. As a compensatory measure for the soil sealing , the Frankfurt (Oder) Botanical Garden was created near Kleistpark .

While the road was being built, the remaining parking area was redesigned again. Only a few selected grave monuments and memorials remained.

Grave and cenotaphs

The memorial stone for Adolf Zehme stands today on the lost grounds of the Kleistpark in the Thomas-Müntzer-Hof. The memorial stones and gravestones of Ernst Martini and Christian Wilhelm Spieker were willfully destroyed in the 1980s. Ulrike von Kleist's tombstone was stolen. A copy was in the courtyard of the Kleisthaus , but it was also stolen. In their place today there is a simplified replica.

Footnotes

  1. Fürstenwalder Strasse was called Ernst-Thälmann-Strasse from 1958 to 1992. Then it was renamed again to Fürstenwalder Straße, except for the section between Heilbronner Straße and Ernst-Thälmann-Brücke.
