history

First company building of the glue factory founded in 1893 in Siegen

In 1893 Johann Friedrich Klingspor founded a glue factory in Siegen. As the demand for glue waned, the company began manufacturing products from 1899 that required large quantities of glue to manufacture. These included, in particular, emery paper and abrasive cloth . In the course of this change, the company was renamed "Siegener Leimfabrik und Naxos Schmirgelwerke". The name refers to the Greek island of Naxos , from which a gray-brown mineral stone comes from, which is used for grinding and polishing.

From 1900 Klingspor sold ground emery . As the demand for emery paper grew rapidly, the production facilities were expanded after two years. A new grinder and a boiler house were built. A branch with a sales office was set up in Cologne in 1902. Since many areas of industry and trade, including the iron and steel industry, which was growing rapidly at the time, needed abrasives, Klingspor was able to establish itself in the abrasives market. In 1917 Carl Klingspor took over the management of the company from his uncle Carl Koecke and increased exports. On January 9, 1922, the general partnership Naxos-Schmirgelwerke, Klingspor & Co. was converted into a limited liability company.

In 1978 the first non-European subsidiary was founded in the USA, and in 1996 the first international production site was opened in Poland. Since the conversion of Klingspor GmbH into Klingspor AG in 2005, operational business operations have been carried out by the 100% subsidiary Klingspor Schleifsysteme GmbH & Co. KG. In 2014 the company began building the new logistics center in Haiger. This is to be opened in 2016. In 2015, a new diamond tool factory was opened in Lviv, western Ukraine .

In 2016 there were 39 sales and manufacturing locations worldwide.

Products

According to its own information, the company currently has more than 50,000 items in its range. This includes tools from the areas of grinding , cutting , milling , polishing and material removal. The products are suitable for processing metals, non-ferrous metals, stainless steel, wood and wood-based materials, lacquer and paint, mineral materials, glass and ceramics as well as plastic, rubber and leather.

The product range is divided into the following categories within the company: Abrasive rolls, abrasive belts, fiber discs, abrasive sheets, quick change discs, abrasive mops, abrasive mop discs, cutting discs, grinding discs, elastic abrasives, carbide cutters and diamond tools. The largest product group of coated abrasives includes abrasive paper and abrasive cloth, which are divided into rolls, strips, tapes and discs. In the area of separation are cutting discs and grinding discs marketed under the brand Kronenflex. About 60 different types are offered here. Abrasive mop discs are an alternative to classic grinding discs and have fan-shaped, radially arranged abrasive flaps with high grinding performance. Abrasive mop wheels are special fan wheels that adapt to the workpiece.
