The Klinikum am Europakanal is a hospital on Am Europakanal 71 in Erlangen . The carrier is District Clinics Middle Franconia .

history

The foundation stone was laid in 1836. The house was founded in 1846 as the Erlangen district mental hospital. It was the first hospital for the mentally ill in Bavaria. The opening took place on August 1, 1846. The director was Karl August von Solbrig (1809–1872). In 1861 von Solbrig became the director of the Munich District Insane Asylum . Friedrich Wilhelm Hagen was the director from 1860 to 1887, Anton Brumm from 1888 to 1896 , and August Würschmidt from 1897 to 1911 .

A part of the hospital became the Psychiatric Clinic of the University Hospital Erlangen with effect from October 1, 1903 .

From around 1910 the facility was called a sanatorium and nursing home.

From 1911 Gustav Kolb was the head of the facility.

In 1936 there were 1034 beds available.

As part of the T4 campaign , a total of 981 patients were removed from the Heil. In seven transports from November 1, 1940, November 5, 1940, November 22, 1940, January 21, 1941, March 25, 1941, April 1, 1941 and June 24, 1941 - and nursing home Erlangen moved to killing centers. Erlangen served as a stopover for some of these patients. The first two transports led to Sonnenstein-Pirna, the next five to Hartheim-Linz. Diagnoses to patients included schizophrenia, dementia, and epilepsy.

The director was Wilhelm Einsle , his deputy Heinrich Müller .

Between 1942 and 1945, a total of 1,501 people died in the institution itself.

post war period

In 2004, it was decided, with effect from January 1, 2005, to transfer responsibility for the Erlangen District Hospital to the Central Franconian District Clinics.

Facility

The house includes departments for psychiatry, addiction, psychotherapy and psychosomatics (401 beds), a center for neurology and neurological rehabilitation (135 beds) and a clinic for forensic psychiatry (100 beds).
