Aghavnavank Monastery

The monastery Aghavnavank ( Armenian Աղավնավանք Aghawnawank ), also Anapat St. Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God) or Aghnabat is a former convent of the Armenian Apostolic Church in the Armenian province of Tavush . The origins of the monastery go back to the 12th and 13th centuries. Today it is a ruin.

location

The monastery stands in the center of a clearing.

The monastery is located on the outskirts of the village of Aghavnavank in the Dilijan National Park in the center of a clearing ( Aghnabat ). The location on an adjacent rock indicates that the place was already a place of worship in pagan times. The monastery area is surrounded by a yew grove that is considered untouched. Some yews are up to 300–400 years old and 25 meters high. Their trunks have a circumference of 70–90 centimeters. The Armenian capital Yerevan is about 78 kilometers away as the crow flies.

Building description

The main church is a cross-domed church with outbuildings. It was built from yellow travertine . As a typical example of Armenian church architecture, the small central church space is crowned by a dome with an octagonal drum . The drum and dome of the building rest on pillars. Outside the dome is covered with a tent roof. The dome and roof were once covered with finely carved stone tiles. There are triangular niches in the east facade. Around the monastery there are some khachkars (artistically hewn memorial stones with a relief cross in the middle, which is surrounded by geometric and plant motifs).
