The Beaulieu-en-Bassigny (Bellus locus) monastery is a former Cistercian abbey in what is now the municipality of Haute-Amance (formerly Hortes ) in the Haute-Marne department , Champagne-Ardenne region in France . Beaulieu monastery is a name not uncommon for Cistercian foundations. It is located around 21 kilometers east of Langres and around eight kilometers north of Fayl-Billot in the Amance Valley .
history
The monastery was founded in 1166 under the episcopate of the bishop of Langres Walter of Burgundy (Gauthier de Bourgogne) and occupied by the Cherlieu monastery . So it belonged to the filiation of the Clairvaux Primary Abbey . Little can be determined about the fate of the monastery, which was destroyed several times in the 16th and 17th centuries and rebuilt in the 18th century. Like all Cistercian monasteries in France, it was likely to have come to an end in the French Revolution .
Buildings and plant
The existing castle-like abbot's house dates from 1731. A chapel originally from the 14th century, but renovated in the 18th century, has also been preserved.
