The Bujedo de Juarros monastery is a former Cistercian abbey near the hamlet (pedanía) Santa Cruz de Juarros in the municipality of Ibeas de Juarros about 35 km (driving distance) east of the city of Burgos in the province of Burgos in Castile-León in Spain , near the border to the La Rioja region .

history

The founding dates of the monastery are given differently: 1159, 1162 or 1172; the first documentary evidence comes from the year 1182. The mother monastery is the monastery L'Escaladieu , whereby Bujedo belonged to the filiation of the primary abbey of Morimond . In the 18th century the cloister buildings were modernized in the classical style. The dissolution of the monastery is likely to have occurred during the reign of Juan Álvarez Mendizábal (1835). The monastery has been used by the brothers of the Christian schools since 1891 . In the 1980s, it was restored exemplary on a private initiative.

Nave

The single-nave, rib-vaulted monastery church is shaped like a Latin cross and has a transept with two semicircular side apses. The west facade is framed by two buttresses ; in between is the slightly protruding portal zone. The portal itself has a late Gothic three-pass arch . The vault ribs rest - as is customary in Cistercian buildings - on side consoles . The pebble pavement of the nave (nature) is similar to that of the monastery of Las Huelgas in Burgos . The exam area was in the south of the church. Seven double capitals and seven bases have been preserved from the medieval cloister (claustro) . The sacristy and the comparatively richly designed chapter house with three openings to the cloister also exist .
